An Ohio woman has been indicted on accusations that she live-streamed the rape of a 17-year-old girl on Periscope, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Marina Alexeevna Lonina, 18, is accused of initiating the broadcast while her boyfriend, 29-year-old Raymond Boyd Gates, sexually assaulted the girl in February in Columbus, Ohio, according to Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Ron O'Brien.
"The victim and the two defendants were socializing and at some point in the evening it is alleged that Gates forced sexual intercourse with the victim and Lonina started Periscoping (live-streaming in real time) the sexual assault," the prosecutor said. "Lonina had also photographed the victim in a state of nudity the night before at Lonina’s house located at 4146 Nafzger Drive in Columbus.
A friend of Lonina’s in another state watched the Periscope live stream of the rape on the 27th and authorities were contacted." The pair have been indicted for one count of kidnapping, two counts of rape, one count of sexual battery, and two counts of pandering involving a minor. Lonina was also indicted on two counts of "Illegal Use of Minor in Nudity Oriented Material or Performance," O'Brien said. Lonina's attorney was not immediately available for comment, while Gates does not yet have counsel.
They face 40 years in prison each, O'Brien said. Periscope has served up more than 100 million broadcasts following its launch last year. Most of the posts have not been harmful or offensive.
But there have been a few abnormal events streamed via Periscope, including a woman driving while intoxicated, a murderer broadcasting himself from jail, and teenagers committing robbery.
